New high-volume telephone system in place for reporting power outages
City Utilities of Springfield (CU) has activated a new, state-of-the-art telephone
system for customers to use when reporting electrical outages. The automated system has the ability to
receive 30,000 calls simultaneously from customers wanting to report a power outage at their homes or
businesses.
"Following the historic ice storm in January 2007, one of the areas we needed to improve was the ability
for customers to get through to us on the telephone with one call, and with minimal delay, to report a
power outage," said John Twitty, CU General Manager. "When customers call 1-888-863-9001, they will
be able to report their outage quickly and efficiently, which helps us improve our restoration efforts."
To report an electric outage, CU customers should call 1-888-863-9001. If they are calling from the
telephone number listed for the address in CU’s customer service records, the system will automatically
identify the customer location and log the outage for restoration.
If a customer is calling from a telephone number different than the one in CU’s customer service records,
they will be prompted to enter the telephone number for the location where the outage is occurring. Then,
the system will log the outage and report it for restoration.
In either case, customers also may choose to have an automated call-back to confirm power restoration.
A mailing to all CU electric customers during July will contain helpful power outage tips customers can
use before, during and after an outage, as well as information about the new telephone system.
Information about 1-888-863-9001 also will be distributed to all CU electric customers in July utility bills
and will appear on customer utility bills each month.
