Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling added to conservation programs
City Utilities Energy Management and Conservation department will be offering a rebate to customers wanting to get rid of old refrigerators or freezers. The program, scheduled to begin in April, will provide pick-up and recycling of working units at no cost to customers, with an incentive of $35 to CU customers who participate. The program is funded by the stimulus act through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. It’s estimated that 2,800 refrigerators and freezers will be recycled through this program which could reduce the electric demand on the system by 432 kilowatts per year.
The total number of rebates and incentives processed this fiscal year is now at 3,619 with approximately 60 percent of the budget being spent. Because of that, Commercial Lighting, Geothermal Heat Pump and Pre-season Central Air Conditioner rebate programs have been closed for the remainder of this fiscal year. For more information on other rebate and incentive programs, visit www.cuenergywise.com or call 874-8200.
