CU Transit Services offers free rides and chance to win concert tickets on “Dump the Pump Day”
City Utilities Transit Services is participating in the fifth annual National “Dump the Pump Day” on Thursday, June 17, 2010. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) the 2010 National “Dump the Pump Day” encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, conserve gasoline, and help reduce greenhouse gases. Over 100 public transit agencies are participating in this year’s event with the Sierra Club signing on as a national partner.
To encourage people to try the transit system, on Thursday, June 17, CU Transit Services will be offering free rides. During the lunch hour, riders on one bus will have the opportunity to win tickets for an upcoming concert. “Ride for the Prize” will be done with the help of Midwest Family Broadcasting and is the first time a contest like this has occurred. The contest bus will leave the downtown transfer center on Thursday, June 17, at 12:05 PM.
“By participating in the National “Dump the Pump Day,” we hope people who have never used our services will give us a try instead of driving their car,” said Carol Cruise, CU Transit Director. “We will welcome new riders and thank our regular riders.”
Across the country, public transportation is seeing an increased number of riders. In 2009 CU Transit Services provided 1.4 million rides. CU’s bio-diesel fueled buses drove 1.2 million miles and operated over 87,000 hours to provide transportation services to our community.
Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the National “Dump the Pump Day” on June 17 is an opportunity for people across the country to make a difference in their wallet, as well as in the environment.
