New CU “Access Express” buses now on the road
City Utilities Transit is debuting five new coaches to replace its current paratransit
fleet, which had been serving disabled passengers since 1997.
CU is required to offer paratransit services for disabled passengers who are unable to access the regular
fixed-route bus system. The service, known as "Access Express," is offered seven-days-a-week, 365-
days-a-year, to disabled customers in Springfield.
In 2009, Access Express provided 17,500 rides to disabled passengers.
Improvements include:
- A front entry door ramp to provide easy access for passengers traveling in wheelchairs.
- A low-floor feature, negating the need to navigate steps for those customers who may be able
to walk, but have difficulty managing steps.
- A new color and design. The distinctive “blue wave” look on these buses will eventually be
used throughout the entire bus fleet and on signs at bus stops.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided the full $650,000 to replace the old
Access Express fleet.
More about Access Express
Potential customers are required to complete an application before certification is received for the service.
Once certified to ride, customers call the CU Transit office at least one day ahead to schedule their ride.
The service is curb-to-curb, anywhere within the city limits of Springfield. The fare for a one-way ride is
currently $2.50. Personal care attendants ride at no charge.
