Dump the Pump Day

City Utilities Transit Services is participating in the sixth annual National “Dump the Pump Day” on Thursday, June 16, 2011. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2011 “Dump the Pump Day” encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, conserve gasoline and help reduce greenhouse gases. Over 100 public transit agencies are participating in this year’s event with the Sierra Club as a national partner.

CU Transit has two special events planned for National “Dump the Pump” Day:
  • CU Transit services will be offering free rides on Thursday, June 16, to encourage people to try the transit system.
  • On Friday, June 17, “Ride for the Prize” will be sponsored by Midwest Family Broadcasting and the contest bus will leave the downtown transfer station at 12:05 PM on Friday, June 17. During the lunch hour, riders on this bus will have the opportunity to win concert tickets and prizes. (Regular rider fees will be charged on Friday.)
“By participating in the national Dump the Pump Day, we hope people who have never used our services will give us a try instead of driving their car,” said Carol Cruise, CU Transit Director. “We will welcome new riders and thank our regular riders.”

Across the country, public transportation is seeing an increased number of riders. In 2010 CU Transit Services provided 1.3 million rides. CU’s bio-diesel fueled buses drove 1.2 million miles and operated over 88,000 hours to provide transportation services to our community.

Sponsored by the APTA, “Dump the Pump Day” is an opportunity for people across the country to make a difference in their wallets, as well as in the environment. For more information or to plan a ride, call CU Transit Services at 831-8782 or visit our website.
