Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling Program to close September 30
City Utilities will close the Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling Program on September 30, 2011. Just over 1,400 refrigerators and freezers have been collected since the program began in February of 2010. CU electric customers may call through Friday, September 30 to have their old working appliance collected and recycled, and receive a $35 rebate.

While the program has been successful in reducing the electric bills of customers by removing inefficient refrigerators and freezers, the amount of the grant is not expected to be completely used.

The City of Springfield was allocated a $1.6 million block grant through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program. CU was provided $400,000 of the grant to fund the Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling Program. Approximately $150,000 is expected to be returned to allow time for completion of on-going projects through the City of Springfield.

“We’ve had good response from customers wanting to utilize the rebate program,” said Cara Shaefer, Director – Energy Management and Conservation, “Participation levels off dramatically after the summer and we feel that it’s the best time to return the remaining funds.”
