CU Transit reports bus ridership up 14 percent
Bus ridership in Springfield experienced another increase in December 2011,
according to a report made to the Board of Public Utilities at their monthly meeting today. December
2011 ridership was 133,755 compared to ridership in December 2010 of 117,624, an increase of 16,131
rides, or 14 percent.
Purchase of new buses to help system’s most-traveled routes
The Board also received an update on the purchase of new buses for the system’s most heavily-traveled
routes. CU is planning to buy up to ten, 30-foot buses to replace older buses that are approaching the end
of their useful lives. CU recently received $3 million in federal funding to help with the purchase. Based
on current bus manufacturer production schedules, it may take up to two years before new buses are
placed into service.
CU staff evaluating Transit campus renovation bids
Eight bids were received for the Transit campus renovation project, with prices ranging from $7.5 million
to $9.9 million. CU staff is currently evaluating each of the bids.
More than 1,000 efficiency rebates, audits processed for customers
CU processed 1,038 efficiency rebates and audits during November 2011, part of its EnergyWise group of
services to help customers save energy, water and money. Participation levels have moderated compared
to previous years, possibly due to federal and state efficiency incentives that are no longer available.
