Power surges can strike at any moment and destroy or damage phone lines, sensitive electronics, computers, appliances, or anything plugged into an electrical outlet.
Preparing for unexpected surges can save you expensive repairs or replacement costs.

Lightning is usually the cause of power surges; however, tree limbs falling onto power lines, construction work, demand fluctuation in your home, auto accidents involving utility poles, and even disturbances transmitted through telephone and cable lines can have the same effect.
At City Utilities, supplying you with reliable and uninterrupted electric power is always our top priority. That's why we offer our SurgePRO system.*
There are three levels to the SurgePRO system:
- The first level of protection is to make sure your home is properly grounded. A CU technician will perform a grounding assessment of your home and suggest any corrections, if needed.
- A surge protection device installed between your home and the electric meter provides the second level of protection. This device protects your electrical system against surges up to 57,000 amps originating outside your home and includes a $5,000 per occurrence connected equipment warranty for major appliances for just $4.95 per month, plus tax. The $25 installation cost can be conveniently added to your next utility bill.
- Surge strips are recommended as the third level of protection for sensitive electronics. When combined with the meter-based device, they serve as a second buffer against any external spikes, or against surges that originate inside homes. Surge strips are used to protect computers, stereo and video equipment, or anything connected to phone or coaxial cable lines.
