   Southwest 2 Project Overview
Southwest 2 For current customers and for future generations, CU must plan well in advance to make sure that the power is there when you need to “flip the switch” in your home or business.

The latest part of this power supply plan adds reliable, affordable, responsible power generation, at the existing Southwest Power Station, to meet growing community demand for power.

Project Update
Last Updated:  March 31, 2010

Project manpower remains around 640 employees. Construction work continues on three major construction contracts; boiler island, balance of plant and coal handling. Construction is at 73% complete, while the overall project is at 81% complete.

Construction Progress this period:
  • Major pressure part erection is nearing completion.
  • Natural gas piping is being installed on the front wall burners.
  • Piping of boiler vents and drains is underway.
  • Installing drain lines to blowdown tank.
  • Erection of penthouse and lower furnace casing continues.
  • Installation of pins for insulation of the furnace and HRA walls continues.
  • Furnace refractory work continues.
  • Insulating main steam, hot and cold reheat pipe.
  • Installation of Turbine electro-hydraulic control piping continues.
  • Working Turbine valves in anticipation of Boiler hydro.
  • Pulling cable in turbine island areas.
  • Installing cable tray in north boiler areas.
  • Installing Gai-tronics and lighting in boiler and baghouse areas.
  • The ash conveyor recirculation tank assembly was completed and weld inspected.
  • Economizer hoppers are being erected.
  • The Air Heater pin-rack is being fit and tacked into place.
  • Weld-out of the SCR continues.
  • Steel erection for SCR platforms and the west stair tower is underway.
  • Tertiary Air fan piping is being installed.
  • Installation of lube oil piping has begun on the FD Fan.
  • Installing conduit for FD, ID and PA fans.
  • Air Heater to Scrubber flues are being staged.
  • The 'A' and 'D' pulverizer assembly is complete.
  • Insulation of baghouse hoppers and compartments is proceeding.
  • South-side pulse headers have been installed.
  • Continue installation of fly ash piping to silo.
  • Siding work as the crusher-house continues.
  • Installation of siding and roofing for the boiler continues.
  • Completed demolition of wall between SW1 and SW2 turbine decks.
  • Assembly of dust collector piping on the tripper deck has been initiated.
  • Installing fire protection piping at crusher-house and tripper deck.

Commissioning Progress this Period:
  • Closed Cycle Cooling Water pump motors were run in.
  • Condenser make-up lines to the Hotwell were flushed.
  • Hydrostatically tested the turbine-side of the Hotwell and Condenser.
  • Hydrostatically tested the shell-side of the Condenser; gasket repairs are required.
  • Checked-out level transmitters and controls on the Hotwell.
  • Distributed control system work continues by the supplier, (Emerson).
  • Continue check-out of available loops of the distributed control system.
  • Hydrostatically tested boiler feedwater to economizer inlet isolation at 4875 psig.
  • Hydrostatically tested attemperator spray piping.
  • Energized 6.9 kV electrical and 480v switchgear at the Cooling Tower.
  • Inspected underground circulating water lines.
  • Flushed effluent line from storage tank to Southwest Treatment Plant.
  • Relay testing continues at the Crusher-House.
