   Southwest 2 Project Overview
Southwest 2 For current customers and for future generations, CU must plan well in advance to make sure that the power is there when you need to “flip the switch” in your home or business.

The latest part of this power supply plan adds reliable, affordable, responsible power generation, at the existing Southwest Power Station, to meet growing community demand for power.

Project Update
Last Updated:  June 30, 2010

Project manpower stands at approximately 620 employees. Construction work continues on three major construction contracts; boiler island, balance of plant and coal handling. Construction is estimated at 90% complete.

The project recently exceeded 1,000,000 hours without a recordable injury.

Construction Progress during the 2nd Quarter of 2010 included:
  • Completed Boiler pressure part erection
  • Installed ash screens at economizer outlet
  • Insulation of furnace sections is well underway
  • Installing Boiler vents and drains
  • Removed access over B and C Pulverizers to allow pulverizer erection
  • Assembling B Pulverizer
  • Installing penthouse thermocouples
  • Installed penthouse cooling fan
  • Installing Sootblower Piping
  • Assembling Submerged Flight Conveyor
  • Erecting SCR Modules
  • Air Heater erection continues
  • Installing Air Heater sootblowers
  • Erected Scrubber support steel and vessel.
  • Erected scrubber lime silo
  • Completed erection of Scrubber to Baghouse cross-over ducting
  • Installing Baghouse outlet to ID Fan ducts
  • Installed Baghouse pulse headers
  • Installing Boiler siding
  • Installing fire protection systems
  • Machine bevel and weld cold reheat line at boiler
  • Insulating Steam Turbine
  • Setting Air Compressors
  • Wiring burner fronts
  • Wiring fan instrumentation
  • Wiring Boiler instrumentation
  • Final assembly of Boiler Feed Pump B
  • Installing Boiler chemical equipment
  • Pulling Electrical cable and terminating in all areas
  • Installing Crusher Building siding
  • Erecting unit feed conveyor bents and trusses
Commissioning Progress this period includes:
  • Energized Main Plant A2 and B2 switchgear
  • Continue check-out of available loops of distributed control system
  • Circulating Water pump motors were run-in
  • Started up DCS and Control Room HVAC systems
  • Flushed Condensate and Feedwater Systems
  • Performed motor run-ins on Cooling Tower Fan motors
  • Ran Circulating Water Pumps A and B
  • Flushed STG lube and seal oil systems
  • Ran Closed Cycle Cooling Water pumps A and B
  • Performed motor run-ins on Effluent Supply Pumps
  • Performed lube system flushes on FD, ID and PA fans
  • Flushed STG electro-hydraulic control system
  • Pressure tested and blew clean plant natural gas supply line
  • Successfully hydro-tested Boiler
