General Information
Welcome Aboard! City Utilities has operated the public transit system for the City of Springfield since 1945. The current transit system can trace its roots back to 1881 when it was known as the Springfield Traction Company. Todays modern public transit system provided 2.05 million rides in fiscal year 2007 and travelled 1.2 million miles of operation. Currently, the transit system has 15 fixed day routes and three fixed night routes, encompassing 173 miles of route. In addition to the fixed route system, CU offers a paratransit service (Access Express) that provides rides to passengers who require additional resources to facilitate their bus travel.
Bus schedules are available in Braille, large print, and audio cassette format in addition to the printed schedules. Contact Transit Services at 831-8782 for more information.

Title VI
What is Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964?
Title VI prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving Federal financial assistance.
City Utilities is committed to ensuring that no person is excluded from participation in, or denied the benfits of its transit services on the basis of race, color, or national origin, as protected by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If you believe you have been subjected to discrimination under Title VI, you may file a complaint.
How to file a Title VI Complaint?
You may file a signed, written complaint one hundred and eighty (180) days to the date of alleged discrimination. The complaint should include the following information:
- Your name, address, and how to contact you (i.e. telephone number, e-mail address, etc.)
- How, when, where, and why you believe you were discriminated against. Include the location, names and contact information of any witnesses.
- The complaint may be filed in writing with City Utilities as follows:

Limited English Proficient (LEP) Plan
Who is a Limited English Proficient (LEP) individual?
Individuals who do not speak English as their primary language and who have a limited ability to read, speak, write, or understand English can be limited English proficient, or "LEP." These individuals may be entitled language assistance with respect to a particular type or service, benefit, or encounter.

Routes & Schedules
Check out CU’s interactive route map to guide you to your destinations around Springfield.
This on-line mapping system uses a powerful internet application and has minimum browser
requirements to provide access. In order to view the interactive maps, you must have the
Autodesk Mapguide plug-in installed on your computer. The maps are designed to automatically
download the Mapguide plug-in. Please allow several minutes for the plug-in to download.
If all you see is a blank window when you try to use the map, then the Mapguide plug-in has
not properly installed. Additional support and information about the Mapguide plug-in can be

Internet Explorer is the preferred browser. Other browsers may operate at diminished capacity

Where to Buy
Bus passes may be purchased at the following locations:

- To purchase passes by mail, send check or money order, payable to City Utilities (no cash please) to:

Please include name, address, and category of pass requested. Passes and ticket books are non-transferable
and non-refundable.
Transfers
If a Transfer to another bus line is needed, you may obtain a transfer from the bus operator at the time of boarding.
A single use transfer may be purchased for an additional $0.10 or an all day transfer may be purchased for a price of two additional bus fares.
A Transfer is only valid to a passenger to whom issued, that is needing to travel from point A to point B
and the bus they boarded does not travel to their destination. A passenger must travel via the most direct route.
A transfer cannot be used on the same line you obtained it from.
Transfers are issued at the time the fare is paid (issued by bus operator)
A Transfer is:
- NOT good after the time limit expires.
- NOT transferable.
- NOT good if mutilated.
- NOT good unless presented at transfer point.
- NOT good for stopovers.
In case of disputed transfer, passenger will be allowed to continue their trip one time. Further disputes
should be brought to management's attention.
