December 2015 Board Update

Dec 3, 2015

Wind Power and Broadband Opportunities Presented to Board

City Utilities has entered into a contract to purchase 200 megawatts (MW) of wind energy from Duke Energy Renewables. The Frontier Windpower Project is a 200 MW wind farm that will be located in Kay County, Oklahoma, near the community of Blackwell.

Through a standard purchased power agreement, similar to the CU Solar Farm, CU will purchase all wind energy produced from the Frontier site. The 22-year agreement is expected to produce enough energy to supply power to approximately 60,000 homes.

This project, combined with other renewable energy projects, brings CU’s renewable energy portfolio to approximately 36 percent of the total energy demand from our 111,000 electric customers. Delivery of energy from the Frontier Windpower Project is expected to begin in late 2016.

Small Business Broadband Program

SpringNet Broadband (a division of City Utilities) has launched a Small Business Program for its SpringNet Gigabit Fiber Internet service in downtown Springfield. The territory covered includes the downtown Springfield area, including the IDEA Commons, and applies to small businesses located between Elm and Chestnut, and National and Grant. The service starts with a three-terabyte monthly data transfer limit and is not rate limited upstream or downstream.
