Natural Gas

Apr 9, 2016

Have you ever gotten a whiff of a hardboiled Easter egg that was forgotten after all of the festivities? Rotten eggs. That’s not a smell you’re bound to forget any time soon.

For your safety, before we send natural gas on its way to your house, we add the smell of rotten eggs to the gas so you know if it’s ever leaking. If you ever smell it in or around your home or place of business, you have to act fast! Sometimes you might hear an unusual hissing sound near areas of excavation. These are all warning signs of a natural gas leak.

Natural gas is highly flammable and you have to act fast to prevent it from igniting. Always follow these tips to keep your family safe:

  1. DO NOT turn on or off any electrical switches, appliances or lights. Anything electrical could make a spark that could ignite the leaking natural gas.
  2. DO NOT use telephones or computers.
  3. DO NOT ring a doorbell.
  4. DO NOT smoke, use lighters or matches, or have open flames. Fire plus natural gas leak equals explosion.

If you ever detect natural gas, leave the area quickly and once you are a safe distance from the danger, call us at 863-9000 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. If you damage natural gas piping while digging or excavating and a gas leak occurs, in addition to contacting us, state law requires you to also notify 911.

By acting fast if you ever detect any warning signs of a natural gas leak, you can keep your home and your family safe!
