Hello! My Name Is Josh.

Jun 8, 2018

Hello! My name is Josh. I’ve been with CU for two years and am currently working as an Electrical Engineer Co-op Senior. At CU, co-ops are college students who are working to get experience in their field while they are still in school.

CU: What do you do in your position?

Josh: My current position at City Utilities includes a litany of things. Mainly I work independently as well as side-by-side with our engineers to assist them with projects such as upgrading protective relays, replacing power circuit breakers, increasing system security, commissioning/testing of new equipment, and upgrading our electric substations to be more reliable and safe. All of these jobs require the use of AutoCAD to show wiring schematics, AC or DC schematics, and switching single line diagrams.

CU: What’s your favorite thing you do?

Josh: My favorite thing that I do is to work with engineers and technicians/electricians as we are commissioning/testing new equipment that has recently been installed into an electric substation. It takes my school education and combines it with real world experience to help me better understand how our electric grid operates and is maintained.

CU: Why do you like working for us?

Josh: I like working for City Utilities mainly for 3 reasons:

  1. The fellow employees I encounter on a day-to-day basis are always kind and are willing to answer any questions I might have on any given job.
  2. As a company, I feel that City Utilities truly cares about who they employ. The company as a whole is always thoughtful of my time and other commitments I have. Being a co-op, this is especially true. Management has always been extremely accommodating of my school schedule.
  3. The experience I have gained working at City Utilities is invaluable. Ultimately, they understand that my education comes first and they truly care about growing me as a person and as a young professional. I have the chance to work with experienced professionals on a daily basis; this has granted me with opportunity to independently engineer jobs from start to finish and come alongside other engineers to learn about the way that different jobs and scenarios are handled.

CU: Why should someone want to apply to work in your department?

Josh: Somebody should apply for the department I work in because they will quickly gain on the job experience. This will grant them problem solving skills and expose them to programs that they will likely use within the power industry. Ultimately they will start their career as a young professional, which will give them a leg-up versus somebody that has not been exposed to the aforementioned things.

CU: What do you do outside of work for fun?

Josh: Outside of work for fun I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hunting, watching baseball and college football, and learning about American military history.
