Hello! My Name Is Gary.
Hello! My name is Gary. I’ve been with CU for 27 years. I am the Associate General Manager – Customer Operations and Communications. I started my CU career as an Engineering Co-op for six months before I graduated.
CU: What do you do in your position?
Gary: The simplest description of what I do is that I get to work with a great team of talented co-workers to provide value to the Springfield community. More specifically, I am responsible for the customer facing functions of the Utility including Customer Services, Communications and Community Relations, Energy Services and Renewables, Metering, and Geographic Information Systems. These groups work together to ensure we are providing reliable and affordable Electric, Natural Gas, Water, Broadband and Transit services to Springfield.
CU: What’s your favorite thing you do?
Gary: My favorite thing that I do is develop new programs and services for our customers. Rapid changes in technology and renewable energy has made it a really exciting time to work in the utility industry. One example of change is our Advanced Meter Infrastructure project. This project involves upgrading all of our electric, gas and water meters so that we can get instantaneous readings. This technology will allow our customers to view their data and make smart decisions to save money and will allow us to offer programs and services that they have come to expect.
CU: Why do you like working for us?
Gary: Working at City Utilities has provided me with the opportunity to do a lot of different things and grow professionally. I have worked on projects such as the rehabilitation of Fulbright Spring, restoring power after the 2007 ice storm to growing the SpringNet Broadband system. My co-workers are the best thing about working for City Utilities, CU feels like a family.
CU: Why should someone want to apply to work in your department?
Gary: City Utilities is a great place to make a career while also serving the community. With all of the different areas of the utility, there are many opportunities to grow and pursue your interests. Customer Operations is a great place to start a career because it gives you a great appreciation of the needs of our customers that you can carry with you into other jobs.
CU: What do you do outside of work for fun?
Gary: Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, playing guitar, reading and traveling.
