Conserving Resources Before A Drought

Jul 2, 2019

Summer is in full swing in southwest Missouri. Even though we have had more than our fair share of rain and Springfield currently has plenty of water in our lakes, the time to conserve our precious resources is now, before they’re low.

Here are some tips you can use to help conserve our water resource now:

  1. Water your lawn using the odd/even watering schedule and water in the early morning hours while it’s cool.
  2. If you have an irrigation system for watering, make sure sprinklers are positioned so water lands on grass and shrubs, and not pavement.
  3. Raise your lawn mower blade to at least three inches. A higher cut encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shades the root system and helps hold soil moisture.
  4. Use a shut-ff nozzle on your hose so water only flows as needed when you’re watering or washing a car.
  5. Have a pool? Consider a water-saving pool filter and keep it covered when not in use.
  6. Repair dripping faucets. One drop per second wastes 2,700 gallons of water per year.
  7. Replace your toilet(s) with efficient models. You can even get a rebate of up to $75 back!
  8. Take shorter showers and don’t let the water run while you brush your teeth.
  9. Wait to operate your dishwasher until it’s full.
  10. Waiting for the water to get hot before a shower? Run the water into a bucket to use elsewhere like for watering plants.

With a few small changes around the house, we can help conserve our precious resources while they are still plentiful!
