November 2019 Board Update

Dec 5, 2019

James River Power Station Units To Be Retired

The Board of Public Utilities voted to begin the retirement process for the two remaining power generation units at James River Power Station. Unit 4, a 60 MW turbine put into service in 1964, and Unit 5 placed into service in 1970 with 105 MW. Both units, last used in 2017 and 2018, have provided electric power to the customers of CU with both natural gas and coal fired generation.

The addition of the 300 MW JTEC Unit-2, in 2011, allowed the gradual retirement of the five generation units at JRPS. Units 1, 2, and 3 were retired from service in 2017 and the addition of renewable energy contracts to replace generation capacity, now allow the retirement of Units 4 and 5. The process now goes to Southwest Power Pool to confirm and approve the removal of the generation units from the marketplace. Two combustion turbines will remain available for service on the property and portions of the James River Power Station building have been repurposed for other utility uses.

Fellows Lake Park Renamed Miller Park

The recreation area near the Fellows Lake Marina has been named “Miller Park at Fellows Lake” in honor of retiring General Manager Scott Miller. “Scott has been instrumental in so many important achievements for the community and the utility that the Board felt it only right to honor him with something for now and future generations,” said Board Chair Joe Reynolds. “The park speaks to Scotts love and respect for our natural resources while providing a location for future endeavors of the utility community.” Miller Park at Fellows Lake is directly west of Fellows Lake Marina and was previously known only as Fellows Lake Park.
