5 Ways To Save Money & Water For Little To Nothing

Aug 4, 2020

Water is one of our most precious natural resources. Conserving water is important year-round, but it is especially important during the heat of summer. Making simple adjustments to your water usage will save both water and money! If each of Springfield’s 80,000 residential and business customers saved just two gallons of water each day, we would conserve more than one million gallons of water per week!

Here are some no-cost and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home:

  • Replace toilets manufactured before 1994. Older toilets use 3.5 gallons ore more per flush, while newer WaterSense labeled models use only 1.28 gallons or less per flush. You may also qualify for a rebate of 50% of the purchase price, up to $75, after you purchase and install the new WaterSense toilet!
  • Listen for dripping faucets and running toilets. Small leaks can add up fast. To check for leaky toilets, put a little food coloring in the toilet tank. If, without flushing, the food coloring appears in the bowl, you have a leak.
  • Install high-efficiency showerheads and replace the aerators on faucets with models rated 1.5 gallons or less per minute.
  • Participate in our Even/Odd Watering Program and only water your yard on designated days of the week based on your address.
  • Adjust your sprinklers to ensure that you’re only watering your yard and only water in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to help avoid evaporation.
