Recreation Updates Coming Soon To Fellows Lake
Outdoor enthusiasts rejoice! Two recreation updates are coming to Fellows Lake in 2021 including a revamped marina and the Dirt 66 trail.
Fellows Lake Marina
Beginning March 1, Watershed Committee of the Ozarks, a Springfield nonprofit, will operate the new Fellows Lake marina, which is currently under construction. In addition to the similar services and hours previously offered at the marina, the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks will also focus on educating lake users about invasive zebra mussels and hydrilla plants, fish species, and the need to protect the area’s water.
Since 1984, CU has partnered with the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks to share the message of the need to keep Springfield’s water resources clean. Adding the marina to their long history of projects that help preserve water quality will make the marina another great resource for the community.
For lake lovers looking to get out on the lake before the opening of the new marina, a permit is not required for boats but all lake regulations, including horsepower limitations, are still in effect.
Dirt 66 Trail
If you haven’t heard yet, construction of the 6.65-mile long “Dirt 66” mountain biking and walking trail at Fellows Lake is well underway. This is the first phase in an eventual 33-mile, $1.8 million trail expansion being funded by the Springfield-based nonprofit, TrailSpring.
The project involves a partnership with TrailSpring and Ozarks Greenways, who is overseeing the project. The new trail system has trails for all skills from beginners to advanced. The first phase of trail will be an introductory style trail for cyclists that can also be utilized by walkers, hikers, and trail runners.
While the community may be excited to jump onto the new trail, until the phase is completed in mid-February, we are asking the public to stay off the trail while it is under construction.
