July 2021 Board Update

Jul 30, 2021

Conserve and Save During Period of Extreme Heat
Extreme heat is not only uncomfortable, but it can also impact utility bills. City Utilities reminds customers of several ways to help reduce the impact of the heat on your budget. Cost saving information and other tips, plus available rebates, can be found on the Ways to Save page of our website.

Taking Precautions as COVID Surge Impacts Springfield
Due to the surge in COVID-19 cases and surrounding areas, City Utilities of Springfield, and MEA Energy Association (MEA), are cancelling the 2021 National Gas Rodeo, scheduled for September 17-18, 2021.

Permanent Financing for Fiber Expansion Project
The Board of Public Utilities approved lease financing of the Fiber Expansion Project, with expected net proceeds of $128 million. Funds will be used to close existing construction funding and allow continued progress of the project. Construction began in 2019 and is expected to be completed in late 2022.

The Fiber Expansion Project, under the direction of SpringNet, has divided the CU service territory into seven areas known as “huts.” Three of the seven areas are complete, and our contract crews are now installing fiber in the southwest section of our service area, with the remaining areas being prepared for fiber installation. Once an area has been completed, access to the fiber is turned over to Lumen, formerly CenturyLink, to provide internet services to homes wishing to use the fiber service. As a reminder, City Utilities is the provider of the fiber but does not provide the internet service to individual homes.
