Back To School Tips For College Students

Aug 3, 2021

It’s back to school season! If you’re headed back to Springfield, we’ve got some FAQ to help you get started on the right foot.

How do I let you know I’m moving?

We can help you get your utility account ready. If you’re moving, you can quickly and easily let us know where and when we should start services for you through the online portal at myaccount.cityutilities.net. Be sure you give us three business days to get your request processed!

How do I add my new roommates to our City Utilities account?

If you’re adding a new roommate or two, give us a call at 417-863-9000 so we can add everyone to the account. We’ll need each roommate’s birthday and social security number. Don’t forget to give us a call if anyone moves out so we can keep things updated.

I got a new phone number over the summer. Do you need to know?

Yes! Call us at 417-863-9000 to update the phone number on your account. An updated phone number helps you quickly report a power outage and helps us communicate important information with you.

My online account information isn’t working anymore. What’s up?

We’ve been working hard, and over the summer, we launched a brand-new customer portal. It’s got all the bells and whistles, but you do need to create a new account even if you had one on our old platform. You can download the app, City Utilities – My Account, from your preferred app store or go to myaccount.cityutilities.net in your browser. You’ll need your account number to create your account so give us a call at 417-863-9000 if you need help finding it.

Do I have to pay a deposit for my new service?

The answer to this question varies from person to person. You have to pay the deposit, but we do have options to waive it including by signing up for Auto Pay. Give us a call at 417-863-9000 and we can take a look at your specific situation.

I’m renting. Are there any good ways for me to reduce my utility bill?

YES! And we did mean to text yell because we’re excited about all these tips:

  • Pick up a smart thermostat. You’ll need your landlord’s permission to install it. We’ve got a rebate that will save you some extra money.
  • Caulk or weatherstrip around windows and doors. If you can feel a draft, you’re losing energy (and money).
  • Add curtains to your back-to-school shopping list. When it’s hot outside, close the curtains to keep the heat from the sun out. In the winter, leave the curtains open and let the sun add some heat to the room.
  • Use fans to help keep you cool in the summer and help circulate heat in the winter. Remember to turn off fans when you’re not in the room.
  • Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth.
