Ways to Save Water

Water is one of our planet’s most precious resources and it’s vital that we take action to conserve it. With the current high temperatures and drought, each one of us has a role to ensure that we are using water wisely and sustainably.
Here are a few easy steps you can take inside your home to help save water:
- Take shorter showers
- Take showers instead of baths
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or shaving
- Do not use your toilet as a waste basket (i.e. flushing when unnecessary)
- Avoid pouring water down the drain when there may be another use for it (i.e. watering a plant or garden)
- Wash fruits and vegetables in a basin
- Do not use water to defrost frozen foods
- Run the dishwasher only when completely full
- Use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine
It isn’t just inside of your home that you can preserve water! There are quite a few ways that you can preserve water outside of your home as well, such as:
- Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and steps instead of hosing them off
- When using a hose, control the flow with an automatic shut-off nozzle
- Avoid purchasing water toys that require a constant stream of water
- If you have a swimming pool, consider a new water-saving pool filter and use a pool cover to reduce evaporation
- Water your lawns early in the day or late at night to avoid evaporation
- Maintain sprinkler systems and look for leaks
- Raise your lawn mower cutting height – longer grass blades help shade each other, cut down on evaporation, and inhibit weed growth
